Deciding to work from home is not something that should be taken lightly. It can be a rewarding, fun, healthy experience but it can also lead to a drop in productivity, a loss of interest in the project at hand and eventually, possibly a lack of earnings. It doesn’t have to be this way, though and there are plenty of ways for you to make the most out of working from home and reap the benefits that come with it.
Treat it Like a Day Job
This is your job and it isn’t an opt-in, opt-out deal. You need to treat this like you’d treat any day job. Show up on time, have breaks, work hard and work to the best of your abilities every day. Get up at the same time every day. Even if you are a fan of sleeping late, make sure it’s consistent and you have a routine. Pinning down a routine is one of the most important keys to productivity.
Dress the Part
The first thing most people think of when they think of working from home is: PYJAMAS! In reality, it’s not a good practice. Pyjamas are associated with comfort and sleeping which means that if you’re working in pyjamas, you’re likely going to be very unproductive. Wear what you think you’d wear in an average office and don’t let yourself slack. Yes, even on bad days.
Sit Separately From Distractions
Following from the last section, don’t sit in bed. Don’t sit in front of your TV. These are places your brain switches off, so to speak and therefore places that are a no-go when it comes to work. Even if it means setting up a makeshift desk in the corner of your living room facing away from the TV, it’s a better plan than sitting on your sofa.
Make a Schedule
Schedules are typically seen as being dull and drab but in reality, they are great for motivation. If you know you need to do x by y time, you’ll notice you’re far more motivated to work to a better standard and in a shorter amount of time than if your schedule was left open all day.
Okay, less of the serious stuff, you are working from home and that DOES mean you get to enjoy your hobbies a lot more. If you have been struggling to stay motivated, set yourself a rewards system. Got a project that needs to be done? Buckle down and once it is done, instead of moving on to the next thing, do something that you enjoy. Or just watch a TV show on Netflix. Treat yourself!
Don’t Push Yourself Too Hard
Some days, it’s just not going to happen. You’re not Superman today or even really a fully functioning human being. If you need a breather, take one. If you need a day off, give yourself one. Staring at a screen in utter despair will not end well in any circumstances and a day or two of relaxing may give you the boost of inspiration and motivation that you need.
